HISTory of short mat bowls
History has it that two men from South Africa many years ago who settled in the UK decided to adapt the game of lawn bowls probably as a result of weather conditions, to be played indoors on a mat. Little did they know how popular and quickly this sport would develop!
It is now played and enjoyed by many thousands of men and women of all ages and abilities throughout the UK and in many other countries.
Short mat bowls is played competitively as singles or teams in socially , friendly league and county matches with the luxury of being indoors all the year round in Bowl Arenas, local community centres, village/church halls or wherever you can roll out a mat specially made for this sport. It shares the same bowls and skills as used in lawn and indoor long mat bowls.
With the formation of the English Short Mat Bowls Association in 1984, the sport enjoys a continuing growth in membership.
